Amaro Lucano
Amaro Lucano is an Italian amaro liqueur founded in 1894 by Pasquale Vena in Pisticci, in the province of Matera in Basilicata, and today also includes an alcohol-free version alongside its wider range. Vena created the recipe in the backroom of his biscuit bakery, blending more than 30 botanicals in a secret formula that has been passed down through the Vena family from generation to generation. The brand is produced by Lucano 1894 S.R.L.
Production begins with selecting, naturally drying, and crushing the botanicals, which include Roman wormwood, clary sage flower, musk yarrow, holy thistle, bitter orange peel, gentian, angelica, elderflower, ruta, aloe, and cinnamon essential oil. The ingredients are steeped in hydroalcoholic solutions and hot pressed to produce an infusion, which is then aged for five months. The finished liqueur is caramel brown in colour and is traditionally served as a digestif.
Amaro Lucano was an official supplier to the Savoy Royal family. Its label depicts women wearing traditional dress of Pisticci carrying a basket of herbs. In 1965, production moved from Pisticci to a new plant at Pisticci Scalo, where the brand remains based. A release marking the company's 120th anniversary has also featured in the range.
The alcohol-free amaro is made from selected herbs using the same production method as the original, and is available through multiple retail channels.
