Barrel Tea

The idea behind Barrel Tea is pleasingly simple: take the wood that gave whisky its character, put it in a tea bag, and brew it. What you get is a hot drink that smells and tastes like the inside of an oak cask, amber-coloured and faintly smoky, without a drop of alcohol in sight.

Henri Koekkoek, the Dutch founder behind the brand, came to the concept through an unlikely route. Trained as a carpenter and holding a degree in Wood Technology, he became fascinated by the way used barrels hold onto the flavours of whatever spirit matured inside them. The wood is genuinely doing the work here. Chips from retired whisky, bourbon, cognac, and rum casks are dried, processed, and packed into sachets. Steep them in boiling water for five minutes and those dormant aromas come back to life.

Koekkoek launched Barrel Tea in 2023, working from Almkerk in the Netherlands. The brand is young, but the concept has found a receptive audience among people who want the ritual and the sensory experience of a whisky without the alcohol or the calories. That is a narrower brief than most AF drinks brands set themselves, but it is executed with a clear point of view.

The range covers the main barrel types. Whisky is the obvious flagship, producing a drink with the woody, slightly smoky depth that the name suggests. Bourbon, cognac, and rum variants follow the same method but pick up different flavour profiles from their respective casks. Gift sets in luxury tins make the brand a natural fit for the present-buying market, and that is where much of its retail presence sits.

In the UK, Barrel Tea is stocked by a handful of specialist alcohol-free retailers rather than mainstream supermarkets. It sits in a corner of the market that is genuinely its own: not a beer replacement, not a botanical spirit alternative, but something closer to a hot drink that borrows its identity from the cooperage industry. Whether that proposition has legs beyond the novelty purchase remains to be seen, but for now it fills a gap that nobody else has really tried to fill.
