Few wine brands carry a legend quite as vivid as Casillero del Diablo. The name translates as "the devil's cellar", and the story behind it dates to 1883, when Chilean aristocrat Don Melchor de Santiago Concha y Toro founded his winery in the Maipo Valley outside Santiago. Concha y Toro has grown into the largest wine producer in Latin America and one of the biggest in the world, exporting to over 130 countries. Its Casillero del Diablo line launched in 1966 and has become the brand's most recognisable label globally.

The legend itself is characteristically clever: when Don Melchor noticed wine going missing from his private cellar, he spread rumours that the devil lurked within. The thefts stopped. The story stuck. It's the kind of founding myth that marketing departments dream about, and Concha y Toro has leaned into it ever since.

Until late 2024, Casillero del Diablo was entirely an alcoholic wine range. That changed with the launch of Casillero del Diablo Zero, the brand's first dealcoholised product. It's a sparkling wine made from 100% Chardonnay grapes grown in Chile's Central Valley, harvested early to retain natural acidity before gentle dealcoholisation. The resulting fizz sits in prosecco territory: light, fresh, and approachable at around £6 a bottle.

The Zero arrived in UK Sainsbury's stores in early 2025 alongside a wholesale and independent retail rollout. It represents a cautious, single-product entry into the AF category rather than a full range commitment. Whether more dealcoholised styles follow will depend on how this first one performs.

For a brand of this scale, the Zero is competitively priced and benefits from the parent company's considerable winemaking infrastructure. What it lacks, at least at this stage, is the depth of range that dedicated AF wine specialists now offer. As a gateway option for wine drinkers who already trust the Casillero del Diablo name, it fills a sensible gap.
