Matthews, who serves as chief brand officer, launched CleanCo after finding that when he chose not to drink, nothing adequately replaced the experience of a gin and tonic or a margarita. The brand set out from the start with the premise that alcohol-free alternatives to spirits should taste like the real thing, and became the first brand to offer a full suite of alcohol-free alternatives to all major full-strength spirits.

Production takes place in Manchester, using a four-step process in which botanicals and natural ingredients are distilled and blended to infuse flavours. All drinks carry natural flavours and contain no artificial colours or sweeteners. The range covers alcohol-free spirit alternatives across gin, rum, vodka, and whisky styles, as well as rhubarb-flavoured alternatives.

CleanCo holds the position of leading independent alcohol-free spirit brand in the UK off-trade and the US off-premise. The brand launched in the United States in October 2021, and by 2023 was selling a cocktail every eight seconds across its global network. In 2025, CleanCo completed a $5 million funding round, with cricketer Ben Stokes joining as an investor and brand partner.

The brand carries over 7,500 five-star reviews and targets people who choose not to drink alcohol. An award-winning brand, seven of its drinks have also won awards. Its lighter bottle design takes 50% less energy to produce, reducing the carbon footprint of each unit.
