Dr. Zenzen

Few alcohol-free wine brands can claim a history stretching back four centuries, but Dr. Zenzen is the dealcoholised arm of Einig-Zenzen, a family winery that has been growing grapes in the Mosel valley since 1636. Thirteen generations of the family have worked the same hills above the river Mosel near the village of Valwig, close to Cochem. The business was formally registered as a wine trading company in 1939, and Dr. Heinz Zenzen set about modernising and expanding operations from 1954. His son, Dr. Peter Zenzen, pushed the brand into international markets from the 1980s, establishing distribution across more than 80 countries.

The Dr. Zenzen name specifically covers their dealcoholised range, separating the alcohol-free products from the broader Einig-Zenzen portfolio. The line-up centres on two German varietals: a Riesling and a Dornfelder. The Riesling leans into the region's classic style, with citrus and stone fruit character and the kind of crisp acidity the Mosel is known for. The Dornfelder, a red grape variety that thrives in cooler German growing conditions, offers darker berry flavours in a softer, lighter-bodied style.

Alongside the core Dr. Zenzen range, Einig-Zenzen also produces Nullnummer, a separate dealcoholised sub-brand. The company invested heavily in modern bottling facilities during the 1990s and 2000s, and their scale means the dealcoholised wines go through industrial-grade processing that is harder for smaller producers to achieve without compromising flavour.

In the UK, Dr. Zenzen products are available through specialist online alcohol-free retailers rather than mainstream supermarket shelves. The pricing sits at the accessible end of the imported German AF wine market. For drinkers who want a recognisable German wine style in a zero-alcohol format, the heritage and provenance here are genuine, even if the brand remains relatively low-profile compared to better-marketed competitors.
