Freixenet
Freixenet is a Spanish producer of sparkling wines and cavas, founded in 1914 in Sant Sadurní d'Anoia, Catalonia, and today the largest producer of traditional-method sparkling wine worldwide.
The brand was formed from the union of two winemaking families: Pedro Ferrer Bosch and Dolores Sala Vivé began bottling cava under the Freixenet name from 1914. Since the 1970s, Freixenet expanded into international markets, and by 1985 it had become the world leader in the cava market. In 2018, the German group Henkell & Co. acquired a majority stake of 50.67%; in 2019 the combined group was renamed Henkell Freixenet. In 2026, Henkell Freixenet completed its acquisition of the remaining shares from the Ferrer and Bonet families.
Alongside its conventional range, Freixenet produces alcohol-free sparkling wines, cavas and still wines. The AF sparkling wines are dealcoholised, meaning the wine is produced to full strength before the alcohol is removed, and span whites and rosés sourced from Catalonia; part of the sparkling range draws on selected Italian grapes. Still formats include white, red and rosé wines, also from Catalonia. Freixenet is a pioneer in alcohol-removed wines.
The brand's international distribution network, built since the 1970s, spans mainstream supermarkets and specialist channels across multiple markets.
