Greene King
Old Speckled Hen carries proper British brewing heritage. The original beer launched in 1979 at Morland Brewery in Abingdon-on-Thames, Oxfordshire, created to mark the 50th anniversary of the MG car factory. That automotive connection gave the beer its name, a nod to a battered old MG used as the brewery runaround.
Greene King acquired Morland in 2000 and moved production to their Bury St Edmunds brewery, but the recipe and character remained. Old Speckled Hen became one of Britain's most recognised premium ales, a pub fixture with its distinctive orange and black pump clip.
The low alcohol version at 0.5% ABV attempts to capture that familiar character. Brewed with Pale and Crystal malts alongside Challenger, First Gold, and Goldings hops, it delivers rich malt sweetness with gentle hop bitterness. The calorie count comes in 54% lower than the original.
Traditional ale drinkers often struggle with alcohol-free options that feel thin or overly sweet. Old Speckled Hen's low alcohol offering maintains body and malt depth, making it a credible choice for those wanting proper ale character without the alcohol content.
You'll find it in supermarkets across the UK and through Greene King's pub estate. For fans of British bitter who've cut back on drinking, Old Speckled Hen offers something genuinely familiar.
