Low Alcohol
The 0.5% version of Greene King's classic copper bitter, carrying the caramel malt character of the original but with a slightly sweet, tangy edge.
About This Drink
Old Speckled Hen is one of Britain's most recognisable premium bitters, originally brewed by Morland in Oxfordshire. Greene King produces this 0.5% version using malted barley extract, malted barley, natural hop flavouring, and a touch of caramel colouring to match the original's signature amber hue. On the nose, there's toffee and toasted malt — familiar enough to trigger pub nostalgia. The body is more substantial than you'd expect from a low-alcohol ale; no thin watery character here. Caramel and biscuit notes come through on the palate, with light earthy hop bitterness in the background. The main weakness is the finish: it turns a little sweet and faintly tangy in a way the full-strength version doesn't. Some reviewers have also noted a faint wortiness to the aroma, which is a known challenge with low-alcohol brewing. At 22 calories per 100ml, it's considerably lighter than the standard Hen. You'll find it in most Sainsbury's and Morrisons, which puts it squarely in the "easy to grab without planning" category. Fans of the original will recognise it as a near relative. Those new to alcohol-free ales will find better-polished options, but this is a solid and widely available entry point.
