Insel Brauerei
Insel-Brauerei is a German craft brewery founded in 2015 by Markus Berberich on Rügen island in the Baltic Sea, specialising in rare and overlooked beer styles.
The brewery is based in Rambin on Rügen, Germany's largest island, and operates as an independent, family-run business. Its guiding concept is the revival of beer styles that have been sidelined by mainstream brewing. Every bottle in the range is wrapped in natural paper, which the brewery uses to provide full light protection and preserve freshness.
On the production side, Insel-Brauerei ferments its beers using open vats: a traditional method in which the fermenting liquid is not enclosed, allowing the yeast to develop its full aromatic character. The alcohol-free range, launched around 2020, uses a gentle fresh-distillation dealcoholisation process (the beer is brewed at full strength, then the alcohol is carefully removed at reduced temperature to protect the delicate hop aromas in the finished drink).
The AF portfolio reflects the same spirit of revivalism as the wider range, covering IPAs, wheat beers, and radlers, including a dedicated sub-line named after the neighbouring island of Hiddensee. The IPA variant incorporates sea salt, a detail that reflects the coastal character of the brewery's Baltic island setting. The AF range is available through specialist alcohol-free retailers and sits in the premium bracket.
Insel-Brauerei suits sober-curious drinkers who want craft-beer depth across a style range that steps outside the familiar lager-IPA-stout mainstream.
