Kirkstall Brewery
Kirkstall Brewery is a Leeds-based brewery producing cask ales, keg beers, and an alcohol-free range, founded in 2011 with roots in a beer-importing business that started in 2003.
The brewery began as Vertical Drinks in 2003, an importer that was the first to bring Sierra Nevada to the UK and helped introduce Odell, Stone, Mikkeller, Oskar Blues and Dogfish Head to the UK. The founders launched their own brewhouse in Burley, Leeds in 2011, starting on an 8bbl system. In 2016, the brewery relocated to 100 Kirkstall Road and upgraded to a five-vessel 50HL brewhouse built by SSV.
The brewery's name connects to a brewing tradition in the area stretching back to 1152, when the Cistercian monks of Kirkstall Abbey brewed on the site. A commercial Kirkstall Brewery Company operated at Broad Lane, Kirkstall from 1834 until its closure in January 1983. The current range spans cask ales, keg beers, and historically inspired Prize Ales, with one IPA taking its cue from an original export beer from the 1860s. A Taproom and Kitchen sits alongside the brewhouse, and the brewery has a small estate of characterful pubs in West Yorkshire.
The alcohol-free range is brewed with malted barley and Citra hops, a natural fit for weeknight drinkers after a well-made beer without alcohol. The brewery has grown through acquisition, adding the Leeds Brewery brand in December 2022 and North Brewery in January 2024.
