Kloster Andechs
Kloster Andechs is a monastery brewery in Andechs, Germany, whose brewing rights trace to a deed of foundation from 1458, and it now also produces alcohol-free beer. It is one of the last monastery breweries still managed by an active religious order and entirely independent of corporations.
Its alcohol-free beers are made using gentle dealcoholisation at low temperatures, a process that brews the beer at full strength and then removes the alcohol afterwards, using membrane technology. Rather than simply dealcoholising an existing beer, the brewery deliberately created a new alcohol-free Helles from scratch, and it invested several hundred thousand euros in the equipment needed for the process.
The alcohol-free range has grown from a single wheat beer, the brewery's first non-alcoholic release, into a spread that now spans wheat beers, lagers and fruit-infused wheat styles.
That range gives drinkers who want a traditional beer style without the alcohol a straightforward, style-led choice, brewed by a monastery brewery that remains under its founding order's control rather than corporate ownership.
