Krombacher
Krombacher is a German brewery founded on 4 February 1803 in Krombach, a suburb of Kreuztal in North Rhine-Westphalia, and produces the most popular alcohol-free pilsner in Germany. Johannes Haas established the brewery to comply with a local regulation requiring restaurants to operate their own brewery. Krombacher is today a family-owned business run by the descendants of Bernhard Schadeberg and one of the largest privately owned breweries in Germany. The brewery introduced its Pilsener at the beginning of the 20th century and now ranks second among Germany's best-selling beers.
Krombacher draws its brewing water from the Krombacher Rock Spring, a local mountain spring source known in German as Felsquellwasser. The alcohol-free range is produced using a de-alcoholisation process developed in Krombach itself, meaning the beer is brewed at full strength before the alcohol is removed. The pilsner variety is brewed under the German purity law, using barley malt, hops, and hop extract, and carries isotonic properties. Krombacher has brewed wheat beer since 2007, with those varieties made using Hallertau hops, wheat malt, wheat yeast, and barley malt.
In 2002, Krombacher launched a rainforest campaign in partnership with the World Wildlife Fund. The alcohol-free range spans pilsners and wheat beers, available through a broad retail footprint.
