Kronenbourg 1664
Kronenbourg 1664 is an Alsatian lager brand, first brewed in 1952 and named to commemorate the original brewery's founding year of 1664, with an alcohol-free range spanning lagers and wheat beers.
The brewery behind Kronenbourg 1664 began as Brasserie du Canon, opened in Strasbourg, Alsace in 1664 by a newly qualified master brewer. It operated as a family-run business from the start, relocated to Cronenbourg in 1850, and today operates from Obernai, Alsace. The 1664 lager was created in 1952 and takes its name from that founding year. Brewing uses Strisselspalt hops, pure underground water, and selected barley. Kronenbourg 1664 is France's top-selling premium lager and the most popular French beer in the world, distributed across more than 70 countries.
Brasseries Kronenbourg became part of the Carlsberg Group in 2008, with Carlsberg also acquiring the UK production licence from Heineken in 2023. Brasseries Kronenbourg holds the second-largest market position in France across beer categories.
In 2006, the brand launched a wheat beer (bière blanche), a style with subtle citrus and coriander accents. The alcohol-free range extends both the lager and wheat beer styles and is stocked through mainstream and specialist retail channels, with a distribution footprint suited to sober-curious drinkers in multiple markets.
