Maisel's
Maisel's is a family-owned wheat beer brewery founded in 1887 in Bayreuth, Upper Franconia, and Germany's fourth-largest producer of wheat beer. Brothers Hans and Eberhard Maisel established the business, which is now in its fourth generation under Jeff Maisel and includes an alcohol-free range alongside its established beers.
In 1955, the brewery introduced its wheat beer range, which became a trendsetter for the style in Germany; by the 1970s it was producing both crystal-clear and unfiltered variants. The brewery also brews Dampfbier, a style of steam beer, as a speciality. In the 1920s, the brewers added a brewer's star to the logo. In 2016, Maisel's opened its Beer Experience World, a visitor centre spanning over 4,500 square metres, alongside a restaurant that opened in March of that year. The original brewery premises are kept as a museum of beer-making and coopering, and the old bottling hall has been converted into a Roaring Twenties themed bar.
For the alcohol-free range, Maisel's uses a proprietary process in which the alcohol is gently removed and fresh brewing wort is added. The beers are brewed with wheat and barley malts and the brewery's own pure culture yeast. One of the range's drinks has picked up awards. The range is aimed at designated drivers and health-conscious drinkers.
Maisel's also operates a craft brewing offshoot, Maisel and Friends, founded in 2012. In 2001, Maisel's sold a 35% stake to Veltins, reacquiring it in December 2005.
