Meteor
Meteor is an Alsatian brewery, founded in Hochfelden in 1640 by Jean Klein and recognised as the oldest brewery in France, now offering an alcohol-free range alongside its beers. The business operated as Metzger & Haag until 1925, when it took the name Meteor, a contraction of the original Metzger and OR. Now in its eighth generation of family ownership, with Edouard Haag as the current family representative and Michel Haag as chairman, the brewery remains independently operated.
Meteor has been behind several French brewing firsts: in 1927 it launched the first pilsner of its style on the French market, and it was also the first in France to introduce the 5-litre mini-barrel format in supermarkets. In 1930, Meteor launched a March-season beer. The brewery produces both bottom-fermenting and top-fermenting styles, drawing on 100% French barley malt and a blend of Alsatian and American hops. Yeast is cultivated on-site and reused up to five or six times per batch. Alongside its core range, Meteor releases two creative, seasonal beers each year, and the portfolio extends to whisky and honey. The brewery currently produces 18 different beers in total.
Meteor's alcohol-free beers bring that heritage to sober-curious drinkers. The brewery employs 200 people, holds International Food Standards certification, and treats its water before discharging it into the Zorn river. Meteor supports deposit schemes for bottle re-use. The Villa Meteor tourism centre and a restaurant in Strasbourg named LE METEOR are open to visitors who want to explore the brewery's history directly.
