New London Light
New London Light is an alcohol-free spirits and aperitifs brand produced by Salcombe Distilling Co. at their waterside distillery in Salcombe, South Devon, and launched on 12 September 2020. Founded by Angus Lugsdin and Howard Davies, the range was developed by Master Distiller Jason Nickels, drawing on the team's experience from creating Salcombe Gin.
The brand's name references 19th-century Salcombe Fruit Schooners that traded with the Americas, and takes its specific title from a lighthouse marking the entrance to a harbour in Long Island Sound. The South Devon coast informs the range beyond that maritime connection: the team draws inspiration from coastal vitality, forages some botanicals locally, and handsources others, including Sugar Kelp.
Production follows gin-making principles built around a rotary vacuum still, which removes alcohol without stripping flavour from the botanicals. Each drink's core is a concentrated distillate made by steeping Macedonian juniper berries, ginger and habanero capsicum in a 40% ABV grain spirit and water before distilling. That core is blended with 15 further botanicals, among them orange, sage, cardamom, cascarilla bark and lemongrass, and kombucha is used to stabilise the finished blend.
The range is designed for health-conscious drinkers and those choosing to reduce their alcohol intake. New London Light launched in the UK in time for Dry January and expanded to the United States on 1 January 2021. The brand has since become the exclusive alcohol-free spirit in Virgin Atlantic's Clubhouses, and donates to the Marine Conservation Society from every bottle sold to fund no-anchor zones protecting seabed habitats.
