Pathfinder
Pathfinder is an alcohol-free amaro-style botanical spirit from Seattle in the Pacific Northwest, launched in September 2021 by co-founders Steven Grasse, Chris Abbott, and Guy Escolme.
The spirit is fermented from hemp using a proprietary yeast strain that yields minimal alcohol, then refined through copper pot distillation in 16th-century style stills. The hemp used contains no CBD or THC, and the finished product contains no alcohol. The botanical formulation includes hemp, wormwood, angelica root, gentian root, juniper, ginger, sage, saffron, orange peel, wild-crafted Douglas-fir, and natural terpenes.
The brand's concept draws on hemp-derived botanical preparations popular in the late 1830s, when hemp had a prominent place in plant-based remedy culture. The bottle design takes visual cues from historical remedy bottles, and the founders drew on the mythology of snake oil salesmen as a further reference point. Pathfinder has developed a cult following since its launch.
The brand donates 1% of its sales to environmental efforts. The spirit is shelf stable for up to 12 months at room temperature and can be enjoyed neat, over ice, or as a cocktail base. Pathfinder is associated with Dry January and the broader sober-curious market. Distribution reached the United Kingdom in 2024, and the brand sells direct online through its own website.
