Rittmayer

Rittmayer is a family-owned brewery and historic country inn in Hallerndorf, Franconia, Bavaria, that has been brewing since 1422, making it one of the oldest family-run breweries in Germany. Originally established as a count's brewery to supply the hunting lodge in Hallerndorf, Rittmayer received the right to brew from the margrave in 1422 and has remained in family ownership continuously since then. The business also encompasses a hotel in the Aischgrund region. Today Georg Rittmayer serves as owner and brewmaster, Simon Friedrich is co-owner, and Benjamin Betz is operations manager.

The brewery produces about 20 beer types, including three seasonal specialties, and brews around 30,000 hectolitres per year, with all beers produced according to the Bavarian Purity Law of 1516. Rittmayer has been brewing Hefeweizen since 1988 and carries out contract filling for other breweries. The current brewery building was completed in 2012. Within the village, Rittmayer runs a pub in the centre of Hallerndorf, two cellar bars, a Keller on the Kreuzberg, and a drinks market on its premises.

Rittmayer's alcohol-free beer is a Kellerbier style, brewed using arrested fermentation, meaning the process is halted before alcohol has a chance to form. Cascade hops and barley malt go into the recipe, drawing on the brewery's traditional Kellerbier. One of the brand's alcohol-free beers has picked up awards. Rittmayer does not use fossil fuels, relying instead on wood chips and a heat storage system, and operates its own sewage treatment plant with biogas production.
