Schloss Eggenberg
Schloss Eggenberg is an Austrian brewery in the Salzkammergut region that exports to more than 40 countries and brews an alcohol-free lager alongside its conventional range.
Schloss Eggenberg is also known for Samichlaus, a lager that was once recognised as the strongest lager in the world. The castle-based brewery sources all brewing water from its own deep wells on the castle grounds, a production characteristic the brewery treats as part of its identity.
The alcohol-free Freibier is produced using a fermentation process designed to prevent alcohol from forming during brewing, rather than removing alcohol after the fact. This differs from dealcoholisation, where beer is brewed at normal strength and the alcohol is subsequently extracted. Schloss Eggenberg's approach produces a beer built from the outset for the alcohol-free category.
The brewery's export reach, spanning more than 40 countries, reflects a distribution footprint that extends well beyond its Austrian home region. For sober-curious drinkers, the Freibier provides access to a castle brewery with a distinctive identity and an unusual approach to alcohol-free production.
