Schneider
Schneider Weisse is a family-owned wheat beer brewery, founded in 1872 and recognised as the world's first registered wheat beer brand. Georg I. Schneider established G. Schneider & Sohn in September 1872, having been granted the right to brew wheat beer as the first commoner in Bavaria to receive such permission, and took over the abandoned Munich brewery Zum Maderbräu as its founding base. Before the First World War, Schneider Weisse had grown into the largest wheat beer brewery in Southern Germany, and Georg IV. Schneider went on to acquire additional facilities across Munich, Straubing, Augsburg, and the Weisses Bräuhaus in Kelheim. When the Munich brewery was destroyed during the Second World War, production transferred to Kelheim, in Lower Bavaria, where the brewery is based today.
Seven generations of the Schneider family have owned and operated the brewery. All brewing follows the Reinheitsgebot (the Bavarian Purity Law governing permitted beer ingredients), with genuine bottle fermentation and open fermenters, drawing on locally grown ingredients including Hallertau hops. The brewery also operates taverns in Munich and Kelheim.
Schneider Weisse first produced an alcohol-free wheat beer in 2002. Its alcohol-free wheat beers use open fermentation, with the alcohol then removed by gentle extraction, preserving the wheat beer character. The beers are non-filtrated and pasteurised, brewed with wheat malt, barley malt, and Hallertauer Tradition hops, and are isotonic, making them a natural fit for runners and fitness-focused drinkers. The range is exported to Austria, Switzerland, and the United States.
