Sutter Home
Sutter Home is an American winery based in Napa Valley, California, that produces dealcoholised wines and is credited with originating the white Zinfandel wine style.
The winery was established in 1874 by John Thomann in Napa Valley. After the Leuenberger family took over the property, they renamed it Sutter Home in honour of Lina Leuenberger's father, John Sutter. The winery closed during American Prohibition from 1920 to 1933 before John and Mario Trinchero purchased it in 1948. It now operates as part of Trinchero Family Estates. Sutter Home is the fourth largest winery in the United States and one of the largest family-run independent wineries in the country.
White Zinfandel originated at Sutter Home. Bob Trinchero first produced it in 1972 by draining free-run juice from Zinfandel must; the style took its recognisable form in 1975 when a fermentation stuck and left residual sugar. The wine became the nation's most popular premium wine in the 1980s.
Sutter Home's alcohol-free range uses dealcoholised wines, meaning fermented at full strength and then the alcohol removed, with grapes sourced from California. The range suits people observing Dry January or seeking alcohol-free wine options year-round. The winery distributes across multiple channels and operates from St. Helena in Napa County, where it owns more than 9,000 acres across California.
