A dealcoholised Californian Chardonnay from the Fre range, with apple and citrus flavours and a noticeably sweet character.
About This Drink
Sutter Home's Fre Chardonnay is one of the longer-standing names in the alcohol-free wine category, produced in California and dealcoholised using a spinning cone process that removes the alcohol while attempting to preserve the original fruit character. It sits at 0.5% ABV and comes in at around 24 calories per 100ml — roughly half that of a regular white wine. On the palate it delivers green apple, lemon, and a creamier apple note in the mid-palate, with a touch of vanilla and oak that suggests the base wine spent some time in barrel. The acidity is present and gives it reasonable structure for an AF white. That said, the buttery character reads as artificial rather than the kind of textural richness you'd find in a well-made oaked Chardonnay, and the sweetness is more pronounced than you might want from something positioned as a dry-style white. At its price point — typically available for around £7–10 in the UK — it's a reasonable everyday option if you like a fruit-forward, slightly sweet white. It won't challenge the better European dealcoholised whites for complexity, but it's widely available and broadly approachable.
