Tarquin Leadbetter sold his first bottle of gin on 30 July 2013, from a converted cow shed on the wild north Cornish coast. He was 23, self-taught, and working in what was then one of the smallest licensed distilleries in England. More than a decade later, Tarquin's has won international awards, ships to over 30 countries, and remains stubbornly hand-crafted — every stage of production judged by eye, touch, and taste rather than by automation.

The distillery's reputation is built on its flagship Cornish Dry Gin, a juniper-forward spirit that draws on coastal botanicals: gorse flowers, sea salt, sea buckthorn, violets, and fresh orange zest. Those same botanicals form the backbone of the brand's broader range, which spans Navy Strength expressions, seasonal gins, and various flavoured variants. In 2017 the SeaDog Navy Strength Gin was named World's Best Gin at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition — a significant moment for a distillery that had started from near-nothing just a few years earlier.

The alcohol-free Cornish Dry Non-Alcoholic Spirit took three years to develop. The approach was methodical: take the original gin, infuse additional botanicals, concentrate through distillation to preserve the flavour character, then rebuild with distilled water and further Cornish coastal ingredients. The result sits at under 0.5% ABV and carries the same aromatic profile as the alcoholic original — pine and citrus on the nose, juniper and orange blossom on the palate, with a clean finish and a faint floral note from the gorse. It's plant-based, free from artificial additives, and comes in at around 27 calories per serve.

At £25 for a 70cl bottle it sits firmly in the premium tier for AF spirits. That's the same territory as the alcoholic gin itself, which says something about how seriously Tarquin's takes the non-alcoholic version rather than treating it as a marketing add-on. It's available through the brand's own website and shops, and through independent retailers. You're unlikely to find it in a supermarket, which suits the positioning.
