Few lager brands carry as much cultural weight in Scotland as Tennent's. Brewed at Wellpark Brewery in Glasgow, a site with a brewing history stretching back to 1556, the modern brand traces its lager roots to 1885 when Hugh Tennent introduced a continental-style lager that would go on to become the dominant beer in the Scottish market. Today it is owned by C&C Group plc and commands a majority share of lager sales north of the border.

Tennent's is an alcoholic lager brand first and foremost. Most of the range is built around its flagship red-T cans, recognisable to anyone who has spent time in a Scottish pub or supermarket. The brand entered the alcohol-free space in October 2020 with the launch of Tennent's Zero, a 0.0% lager aimed at Scots who wanted something familiar during periods of not drinking.

Tennent's Zero uses the same Scottish water and barley that the brewery has long leaned on, attempting to replicate the clean, crisp character of the core lager without the alcohol. It comes in standard can formats and is stocked in Scottish supermarkets, including ASDA. The product is what you would expect from a big mainstream lager brand making a considered but fairly restrained move into the AF category: uncomplicated, session-friendly, and recognisable.

The brand has no particular ambition to be at the forefront of the alcohol-free movement. Tennent's Zero exists to give existing fans an option rather than to attract new audiences to AF drinking. That pragmatic approach suits it well enough on a supermarket shelf.
