Tennent's
Tennent's is a Glasgow-based lager brand with roots at Wellpark Brewery dating to 1740, producing a 0.0% alcohol-free lager launched in October 2020 under the name Tennent's Zero.
The Wellpark Brewery site has been associated with brewing since 1556, and the brand as it is known today was formally established in 1740 when brothers Hugh and Robert Tennent founded H&R Tennent at the Glasgow site. Tennent's Lager has been the best-selling beer in Scotland since the mid-nineteenth century, giving the brand an unusually deep regional identity compared with most producers entering the AF lager category. In 2009, Tennent's was acquired by C&C Group plc, the group that also holds Magners and Bulmers within its portfolio.
Tennent's Zero uses water drawn from Loch Katrine in the Scottish Highlands, the same source as the standard lager, maintaining continuity between the full-strength and alcohol-free versions. The AF range is a single, focused product rather than a broad portfolio of styles, and the brand has not expanded it since the October 2020 launch. Tennent's Zero is available through mainstream supermarkets as well as on-trade venues across Scotland, fitting the brand's established multi-channel distribution model.
Tennent's position in the sober-curious market is built almost entirely on recognition. For a category where most 0.0% lagers come from producers with little pre-existing equity in mainstream drinking culture, Tennent's Zero carries the familiarity of a name that has been present on Scottish bar tops for generations. That recognition provides a practical shortcut for drinkers making their first move into AF beer, where brand trust is often the deciding factor in an initial purchase.
