Toast Brewing
Toast Brewing is a London-based brewery, founded on 22 January 2016, that uses surplus bakery bread to replace 25% of the malted barley in all of its beers, including an alcohol-free lager.
The brewery was founded by Tristram Stuart, Louisa Ziane, and Rob Wilson, with the concept taking shape in 2015. Registered as Toast Ale Ltd in England and Wales, Toast has its beers brewed at Freedom Brewery in Staffordshire. The founding purpose is food-waste reduction: each beer contains approximately one slice of salvaged bread that would otherwise have been thrown away. Toast openly shares its recipes and methods, and it does not export its beers, citing environmental reasons.
Toast donates 100% of its distributable profits to charities working on nature restoration, a fairer food system, and waste reduction, with Feedback as its main charity partner. The Equity for Good investment model, introduced in 2018, additionally directs net capital gains back into those same causes at 100%. By 2022, when the brewery raised £2m in funding, it had donated £106,000 to charitable causes and diverted over 3 million slices of bread from landfill. Toast also has the world's first living beer tap.
The alcohol-free offering is a gluten-free craft lager brewed with English hops and malted barley alongside the surplus bread, suited to drinkers seeking alcohol-free options. Toast sits in the mid-range price bracket and is available through multiple channels.
