Van Hunks is a Cape Town-based producer of Cap Classique sparkling wines, launched in 2020 by Matthew Krone, a 14th-generation sparkling winemaker from the Krone family of Stellenbosch.

The brand is named after Jan van Hunks, a figure long woven into South African folklore. In the legend, Van Hunks would stroll through the fynbos, scale the sandstone cliffs of Table Mountain, and on quieter days rest at its edge. Van Hunks launched with a sparkling mead (honey wine) in 2020 and added brut and rosé Cap Classiques the following year. Cap Classique is the official South African name for sparkling wine made by the Méthode Champenoise, the process used to produce Champagne.

The alcohol-free sparkling wine is dealcoholised, meaning it begins as a fully fermented wine before the alcohol is removed. It is made from locally hand-harvested Chenin Blanc grapes and fermented with native yeasts, making it a natural option for sober-curious drinkers and those avoiding alcohol. The winemaking team practises pesticide-free growing and focuses on water conservation as part of an advanced sustainable farming approach across its Stellenbosch vineyards.

Van Hunks sits in the premium bracket. The wider Cap Classique lineup draws on Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinotage grapes alongside the Chenin Blanc, with all varieties hand-harvested from local vineyards.
