Whitley Neill
Whitley Neill is a London Dry Gin distilled in the City of London, founded in 2005 by Johnny Neill, an eighth-generation distiller whose family's gin heritage dates to 1762. The brand launched its first alcohol-free range in 2022.
Johnny Neill is a descendant of Thomas Greenall. Whitley Neill draws flavour inspiration partly from South Africa, with baobab fruit and Cape gooseberries among the nine botanicals in the gin. The full selection includes coriander seeds, sweet lemon, sweet orange, angelica root, cassia bark, florentine iris, and juniper berries. The spirit is steeped with those botanicals before distillation in a copper pot still that is over 100 years old. At launch, the brand used a matte black bottle bearing a stylised baobab tree logo; the branding was redesigned in 2013.
Whitley Neill was acquired by Halewood Wines and Spirits in 2009. Production moved to Halewood's City of London Distillery in 2021.
The alcohol-free range is made using a spinning cone vacuum column still, the only one of its type in the UK, which removes the alcohol from the distilled liquid while preserving its botanical character. The AF range draws on existing flavour profiles from the alcoholic lineup, with Scottish raspberries and rhubarb and ginger among the inspirations. Part of the range is based directly on the brand's number-one-selling premium gin. Juniper and liquorice feature among the botanicals used in the alcohol-free gins. The range is sold through multi-channel retail and directly from the brand's own site.
