Smoothie sours are a divisive style: loud, thick, heavily fruited, and as far from a session bitter as you can get while still calling it beer. This one from Lowtide (now trading as Below Brew Co) commits fully to the format. The fruit additions — peach, apricot and raspberry — dominate the aroma and drive the flavour throughout. The base beer is a sour ale, which contributes lactic acidity to cut through the fruit sweetness and stop it becoming one-dimensional. It pours deep pink and slightly hazy with a soft, mousse-like head. The nose is immediately jammy: ripe stone fruit and berry, sweet but with a sour edge underneath. On the palate the tartness and the fruit sweetness push and pull at each other. The mouthfeel is smooth and creamy, which is characteristic of the smoothie sour format — the fruit purée thickens the body and rounds out the acidity. The finish is tart and short. Not a beer for everyone, but if the style is your thing, this is well executed for an alcohol-free version. The 0.5% ABV keeps it within AF territory while the fermentation character still contributes to the overall complexity.
