Maiden Mary Pale Ale
An award-winning alcohol-free pale ale from Ilkley Brewery, brewed with US and New Zealand hops. Citrus and mild pine with a malt sweetness from the Munich and crystal bill.
About This Drink
Maiden Mary is Ilkley Brewery's alcohol-free pale ale, and the hop selection makes it one of the more thoughtfully built beers in the category. Calypso, Azacca, Independence and Ahtanum hops from the US and New Zealand are all dual-purpose varieties known for tropical fruit, citrus and pine character, and they're working against a complex UK malt bill of Vienna, Caramalt, Aromatic, Munich and Crystal. The result has more layers than a standard alcohol-free pale. The Vienna and Munich malts give it biscuity body, the caramalt and crystal add a residual sweetness, and the Aromatic malt contributes a floral, slightly spicy note. Against that backdrop, the hops deliver citrus and mild pine, with tropical fruit notes from the Azacca and Calypso. The balance between malt sweetness and hop bitterness is the defining quality here: it drinks like a genuine pale ale rather than a hop-water. At 0.5% ABV it sits just inside the low-alcohol bracket. For fans of UK craft pale ales who want something alcohol-free that holds its shape, Maiden Mary is worth finding.
