Last Light Nitro Stout
A 0.5% Irish dry stout from Siren Craft Brew, nitrogenated for a creamy, velvety pour and roasted coffee-chocolate character.
About This Drink
Nitro stout is one of those formats that tends to translate well to low-alcohol brewing. The nitrogen does a lot of the heavy lifting: the tight, creamy head, the soft velvety texture, the sense of body that a thin beer would otherwise lack. Last Light makes good use of it. Pour it hard, as Siren instruct. Invert the can fully before opening to activate the nitrogen. What comes out is a deep black beer with a dense tan head and a mouthfeel that is notably smooth for a 0.5% pour. The aromas are roasted barley, ground coffee, and a thread of dark chocolate. On the palate the coffee roast character leads, with bitterness that is measured rather than aggressive. It is dry in the classic Irish stout tradition. The absence of alcohol is not disruptive here. The nitro delivery and the roasted malt do enough work that you are not chasing something that is not there. A strong entry in the low-alcohol stout category, and confirmed vegan.
