Basqueland Brewing has been making noise in the craft beer world from their base in Hernani, in the Spanish Basque Country, and the Hero range is their attempt to bring proper IPA craft to the non-alcoholic space. The Hazy IPA is the hazier, fruitier of the two — unfiltered and unpasteurised, which is a meaningful choice. Most 0.5% beers get stripped back during production; leaving this one unfiltered means you get more of the hop oils and yeast character intact. The hops are Vic Secret and Cashmere Cryo, a combination that pushes mango, ripe stone fruit and a soft citrus edge. It's juicy without being cloying, and the haze gives it a fuller mouthfeel than many low-alcohol beers manage. There's no sharp bitterness — the finish is smooth and fruit-forward. If you've been disappointed by thin, watery 0.5% IPAs in the past, this is a genuine step up. The unfiltered approach means each can benefits from the same care as the brewery's alcoholic range, rather than being treated as a stripped-down afterthought.
