Born Free Pale Ale
Crafty Devil's first foray into AF brewing: a 0.5% pale ale loaded with Citra, Citra Cryo, Citra Dynaboost and Motueka Hop Kief.
About This Drink
Cardiff's Crafty Devil spent over a decade building a reputation for hop-forward beers before touching the AF category. Born Free is the result - and the wait shows. Rather than reaching for the obvious route, they've loaded this pale ale with four distinct hop additions: Citra in three forms (standard, Dynaboost, and Cryo) plus Motueka Hop Kief. The effect is a genuinely aromatic beer that punches well above what you'd expect at 0.5%. The main challenge wasn't the fermentation - it was keeping the hop character intact through pasteurisation. Crafty Devil brewed the first batch in November 2025 and held it back until they were satisfied that the process wasn't stripping out what made it worth drinking. That patience is evident in the glass. In terms of flavour, it's citrus-led with tropical fruit and a soft peach quality underneath. The body is light but not watery, and the finish is clean rather than cloying. For a 440ml can at £3.05, it sits comfortably alongside the better independent AF pale ales currently on the market. Currently sold direct from the Crafty Devil webshop and through their Cardiff and Penarth cellars.
