Freeky Ginger Ale
A 0.5% ginger ale from Poland's Maryensztadt, brewed on a soft malt base with lively ginger spice running through it.
About This Drink
The Freeky range is Maryensztadt's AF line, and the Ginger Ale is the one that takes the brewery furthest from its roots. It's not a beer with a hint of ginger — the ginger is the point. The malt base is gentle, present mainly as body and a faint sweetness, and it carries the spice without competing with it. The ginger heat is moderate and clean rather than raw or sharp. There's a light sweetness underneath, the carbonation is lively enough to keep it from feeling flat, and the finish is dry and fairly short. It's closer to a craft ginger beer in character than a flavoured lager, which makes the 0.5% ABV almost incidental — you're not really here for a beer experience. Worth noting that it comes in a 500ml bottle, which is a bit much if you're drinking it solo with a meal. It's stocked by UK AF specialist retailers and is reasonably priced for the style. If you want something with more backbone than a soft drink but less sweetness than most commercial ginger beers, this fills that gap.
