About This Drink
Nogne Svart/Hvit takes its name from the Norwegian for 'Black/White', a reference to the contrast between the heavy use of roasted malts and the white lactose (milk sugar) that defines the recipe. The lactose is unfermentable, providing body and sweetness to compensate for the absence of alcohol, while the roasted grain character adds coffee and chocolate notes intended to balance that sweetness. The brewery positions the beer as a dessert drink and a credible alternative to coffee, rather than a straightforward take on a conventional stout. Nøgne Ø developed Svart/Hvit to offer a full-bodied dark ale in a non-alcoholic market that had previously been dominated by light lagers.
