Sober Spirits makes its rum the same way it makes all its spirits: start with the real thing, then take the alcohol out. The rum begins in the French Caribbean, where it is distilled to 65% ABV before making the journey to Grasse in the south of France. Grasse is the perfume capital of the world, and the distillery there has been running since 1875. It is here that the alcohol is extracted, leaving behind the rum's aroma and character without a drop of ethanol. The result is a convincingly rum-like spirit alternative. Caramelized dried fruits, vanilla, and a gentle woody note are all present without tasting artificial. The vegetable glycerin base gives it reasonable body. At 29 calories per 100ml it is also very low calorie, and there is no sugar at all despite the sweetness on the palate. Works well in a Mojito or Dark and Stormy style serve. A solid all-rounder for anyone who wants to mix rather than sip neat.
