Adnams
Adnams is a Southwold, Suffolk brewer and distiller founded in 1872, offering alcohol-free beers, ciders and wines alongside its core range of spirits and traditional ales. George and Ernest Adnams purchased the Sole Bay Brewery in 1872, and the company was incorporated as Adnams and Co. in 1890. It has remained independently run and family-owned since then.
Beer has been brewed on the Adnams site in Southwold since at least 1345. In 2010, Adnams became the first brewery in the UK legally permitted to install a distillery, opening the Copper House Distillery for the production of gin, vodka and whisky. In 2008, Adnams brewed the UK's first carbon-neutral beer. The mixed-culture yeast Adnams uses was sourced from Morgans brewery of Norwich in 1942, and annual production stands at around 85,000 barrels.
Adnams installed a de-alcoholisation plant in 2018, enabling it to produce dealcoholised beers, meaning beers brewed at full strength before the alcohol is removed. The company also uses reverse-osmosis technology in its alcohol-free production. In March 2019, Adnams launched its first cider, using English bittersweet and dessert apples. As an East Anglian wine merchant, Adnams also produces alcohol-free wines sourced from Spain, made with Cabernet Sauvignon and Tempranillo grapes.
Adnams operates as a brewer, distiller, wine merchant, retailer, publican and hotelier. Two of its alcohol-free drinks have won awards. The first Adnams retail store opened in 1987, and the company established a charitable trust in 1990. Its distribution centre features the UK's largest living roof.
