Fever-Tree
Fever-Tree is a British producer of premium alcohol-free mixers and ready-to-drink cocktails, co-founded in 2004 by Charles Rolls and Tim Warrillow. The brand's founding premise was that if three-quarters of a drink is the mixer, it should be the best, a conviction the founders arrived at after spotting that premium spirits were growing quickly while mixers were largely neglected.
The name comes from the cinchona tree, referred to as the fever tree in India, whose bark yields quinine. Rolls and Warrillow traced early seventeenth-century references to the tree in the British Library, then located one of the only remaining plantations of original Cinchona Ledgeriana trees in the Democratic Republic of Congo, establishing a quinine supply for the brand's first product, launched in 2005. The wider range spans tonic waters, ginger beers, ginger ales, colas, lemonades and soda waters. The alcohol-free ready-to-drink range is made with distilled botanicals and free from artificial flavourings or sweeteners.
Ingredient sourcing draws on many countries. Bitter oranges come from the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico, blood oranges from Southern Italy and Sicily, ginger from Nigeria and Cochin in south-west India, sea salt from Ayrshire in Scotland, spearmint from the El Bourouj region of Morocco, Damascena roses from Turkey, pimento berries from Jamaica, and vanilla from Madagascar.
Fever-Tree floated on the London Stock Exchange in 2014, reached the United States and Spain in 2007, and overtook Schweppes in value in the UK by 2018. By 2022 the brand was present in over 100 countries, with offices spanning the UK, Germany, Italy, France, Spain, Austria, the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Singapore. The brand acquired its German distributor Global Drinks Partnership in Munich in 2020 and Powell & Mahoney mixers in 2022. Over 350 employees worked globally by 2024, and group revenue was around the mid-£300 million range in 2023. Fever-Tree has supported Malaria No More since 2013, raising $203,946 for the charity in 2018, and partnered with Earthwatch Europe to plant a Tiny Forest.
