The starting point for Genie Drinks was a beer garden in summer 2017. Founders Alex and Bill were out but not drinking, and faced with the usual soft drink options — too sweet, too childish, not what either of them actually wanted — they ended up ordering tap water. That particular dissatisfaction had a longer backstory. Alex had spent time in India and developed a taste for natural fruit sodas with real complexity. Bill had discovered kombucha in the US and became interested in what fermentation was doing for gut health. Between them, they had the outline of an idea: a grown-up soft drink with genuine health benefits and flavour that didn't insult you.

They quit their jobs, set up in a kitchen, and gave themselves strict rules: natural ingredients only, ethical sourcing, no compromise on taste, and real measurable health benefits rather than vague wellness claims. The experiments took months. Getting the fermentation right, the flavour balance right, and the consistency right across batches is a different problem from getting a recipe to taste good once.

The formula they landed on combines a 21-day fermentation process with live Bacillus Coagulans cultures — a probiotic strain that survives heat treatment and the digestive tract better than the more fragile Lactobacillus strains found in some fermented drinks. Each can contains at least one billion of these cultures alongside natural fruit and botanicals. No artificial sweeteners, no artificial flavours. Added vitamin C rounds out the formulation.

The range currently covers three flavours: Fiery Ginger, Dry Apple, and Blueberry and Raspberry. Fiery Ginger is the most assertive, with a genuine burn that distinguishes it from ginger drinks that merely hint at the spice. Dry Apple is the most restrained, closer to a dry cider in its flavour profile without the alcohol: tart, clean, slightly earthy. Blueberry and Raspberry is the sweetest of the three and the most immediately approachable.

Since launching in 2019, Genie has picked up eight Great Taste Award stars across the range, and holds the title of Great Taste Producer. The awards circuit matters in the premium soft drink market because it gives independent brands a credibility marker that advertising budgets can't easily replicate.

Distribution is through specialist retailers and wholesale channels rather than major supermarkets, which keeps the brand in the territory of farm shops, health food stores, delicatessens, and specialist drink retailers. That's a deliberate fit with the brand's positioning: it's not competing with Fever-Tree on the supermarket shelf; it's competing for a different kind of attention from a different kind of shopper.

For a small brand built on a genuine product conviction, Genie is doing what independent craft drinks companies rarely manage: consistent quality, coherent flavours, and a health story that holds up to scrutiny.
