Kahol Spirits was founded in 2022 by Mustafa Mahmud, who set out from East London with a specific ambition: to make alcohol-free spirits that feel genuinely like drinking spirits, not like a compromise. The name is derived from the Arabic word for alcohol, which is fitting for a brand built on the idea that the ritual of drinking matters as much as the drink itself.

Mahmud's starting point was cultural as much as practical. Drinking occasions, in his view, are bound up with life's significant moments: celebrations, conversations, quiet rituals at the end of the day. He wanted those moments to remain intact for people who choose not to drink. That meant getting the sensory experience right, not just removing alcohol from the equation and hoping for the best.

To achieve it, Kahol developed its own production process. The brand takes full-strength spirits, puts them through secondary fermentation to bring the alcohol down to 0%, then uses a blending stage designed to replicate the warming sensation and mouthfeel that alcohol provides. It's a technically involved approach, and it shows in the range.

The current lineup covers nine spirits across the main categories. There are three whisky-style expressions: Malt Abbey (their Speyside-inspired bestseller), Maggie Bailey (a Kentucky bourbon-style), and NESSIE (peated Islay-style). The rum column has two entries: Admiralty, a Caribbean spiced rum alternative, and VELAZQUEZ, a Cuban añejo-style. KENSHO covers Japanese blended whisky territory, Ninth Act is the gin, and Noche Libre handles tequila. CAGLIARI sits apart from the rest as an Italian aperitivo-style expression, a limited-edition departure from the spirits-replication formula.

That breadth is notable for a brand barely three years old. Most AF spirits producers stake out one category and work it hard. Kahol has gone wide, building what amounts to a full AF spirits cabinet from scratch. Whether every expression lands as convincingly as Malt Abbey is a fair question, but the range gives bartenders and home drinkers genuine options across multiple spirit styles.

The brand's stated audience is the "flex-drinker": someone who drinks alcohol sometimes but wants to moderate rather than abstain entirely. It's a realistic framing for where a lot of people actually are. Kahol positions itself accordingly, without the slightly evangelical tone that some AF brands adopt.

Distribution is still relatively selective. Products are available direct from the Kahol website and through specialist AF and wholesale channels, including Dive Bar in London and trade buyers via EeBriaTrade. The brand isn't in the major supermarkets yet, which keeps it in premium specialist territory for now. For anyone building a serious home bar who wants to keep it alcohol-free, it's one of the more complete options available from a single brand.
