San Miguel
San Miguel is a Spanish lager brand founded in Manila, Philippines, in 1890, now owned by Mahou San Miguel, Spain's largest brewing group, with an AF lager that has been in market since 2001 as the first 0.0% beer launched in Spain.
The brand traces its origins to the opening of La Fábrica de Cerveza de San Miguel in Manila by Enrique María Barretto de Ycaza y Esteban. The Spanish operation was formalised in 1957 following the Manila Agreement, which established San Miguel Fabricas de Cerveza y Malta as an independent Spanish company. Today Mahou San Miguel is a 100% Spanish family-owned business and the leading brewing group in the country, with distribution reaching more than 40 countries.
San Miguel 0,0 was the first 0.0% beer in Spain at its 2001 launch, giving the brand over two decades of presence in the AF lager category ahead of the current wave of dedicated AF breweries. The range has since grown beyond the original pale lager across multiple styles, including formats that blend natural lemon juice with the base lager and a separate toasted-malt style brewed with toasted malts for a darker flavour profile. The 0.0% range is widely stocked across mainstream supermarkets and through specialist AF retailers internationally.
San Miguel 0,0 sits in the mid-range price bracket. Its combination of long AF category history and broad international distribution footprint gives the brand a different standing from newer entrants: weeknight drinkers and sober-curious consumers can access the range through mainstream channels without specialist sourcing, backed by more than twenty years of 0.0% production.
