San Miguel
San Miguel is a Spanish lager and pilsner brand whose origins lie in Manila, Philippines, where Don Enrique María Barreto de Ycaza founded the brewery in 1890 under a Spanish Royal Charter. Established as La Fábrica de Cerveza San Miguel, it became the first brewery in Southeast Asia and initially produced European-style lager beers. The brand expanded to Spain in 1957, opening its first production centre in Lleida, and launched its first Spanish lager in the same year. Mahou acquired San Miguel in 2000, and the brand is now owned by Mahou San Miguel, a 100% Spanish company with its registered office in Malaga. San Miguel holds the leading position in the beer sector in Spain and has a presence in more than 70 countries, making it the internationally largest Spanish beer brand.
San Miguel launched the first alcohol-free beer in Spain in 2001. The alcohol-free beers are brewed in a pilsner style using barley malt, hops, water, yeast and aromas, and the range also includes radler-style options blended with lemon. In 2003, the brand launched an ecological beer.
The alcohol-free range extends a lager and pilsner portfolio distributed across mainstream retail channels internationally, and suits sober-curious drinkers seeking a widely recognised brand in alcohol-free form. In the UK, San Miguel is brewed under licence by Carlsberg.
