Funky Fluid is a Warsaw craft brewery with a reputation for pushing sour and fruited styles as far as they'll go. Free Black Currant is one of the more focused entries in their alcohol-free range: a single-fruit sour that doesn't mess around. It pours a deep purple-red with a light, quickly fading head. The nose opens on fresh black currant juice, sharp and concentrated, with a faint lacto undercurrent that gives it structure without taking over. On the palate, the berry arrives bold and immediate. Tart and jammy in equal measure, the sourness is restrained enough to be approachable, with enough sweetness to round off the edges rather than cloy. The finish is clean and relatively short, leaving a pleasant berry brightness behind. There's nothing complicated about it. As single-fruit sours go, this does the job squarely.
