Moersleutel is a craft brewery from the Netherlands, and Motor Oil is their flagship imperial stout — a beer with enough cult following that the non-alcoholic version had serious expectations to meet. They approached the problem as an engineering challenge rather than a marketing exercise: malt bills were rebuilt from scratch to find combinations that produce the right roast and body without relying on alcohol for warmth or viscosity. The additions are ambitious. Vanilla and tonka bean bring sweetness and depth, while raisins and cinnamon are slow-steamed together for 12 hours before being added to the brew. The Maillard reaction during that process creates caramel and roast complexity that does not have to come from the alcohol. Barley, rye, and wheat make up the grain bill, with hops taking a back seat. It pours black with a creamy tan head. The aroma is a bakery and a coffee shop colliding: espresso, dark chocolate, cinnamon roll, warm vanilla. On the palate the body is full and creamy — genuinely so — with rich cocoa, roasted malt, and raisin sweetness layered under a soft bitterness. The finish is long and warming without any alcohol heat. One of the more convincing AF stouts around.
