Woodforde's have been brewing in Norfolk since 1981 and VOLT 0.5 is their move into the low-alcohol category. It is an American IPA in style, which means the hops are doing the work: Mosaic, Chinook, Citra and Cascade between them cover tropical citrus, pine resin, grapefruit and a background of earthy bitterness. The grain bill uses rye and oats alongside the standard malted barley and wheat, which gives the body a degree of fullness and texture that straightforward pale malts alone wouldn't provide. Potassium sorbate appears on the ingredients list, which is common in low-alcohol beers as a preservative -- it helps stability at lower ABV where the alcohol itself no longer does that job. It doesn't affect the flavour at the concentrations used. At 0.5% it sits at the sessionable end of the low-alcohol range rather than the fully alcohol-free category. Available in 500ml bottles, which suits the style well. Both vegan and gluten-free.
