Hell Alkoholfrei
A traditional Bavarian Helles lager from the Tegernsee region, brewed to the Reinheitsgebot and gently dealcoholised to 0.5% ABV.
About This Drink
Tegernsee is a small lake town in the Bavarian Alps about 50km south of Munich, and the Herzoglich Bayerisches Brauhaus there has been brewing since 1675. The Hell Alkoholfrei takes their flagship Helles and removes nearly all the alcohol while attempting to keep the character that makes Helles such an enduringly popular style — clean, malt-forward, gently bitter, never showy. It largely succeeds. Brewed with mountain spring water, malted barley, and hops under the Reinheitsgebot, the dealcoholisation process is done gently to preserve those fresh lager qualities. The result is a clear yellow-gold beer with a proper white head, soft bread dough on the nose with a faint floral note from the hops, and a dry, peppery finish. At 22 kcal per 100ml it's one of the lower-calorie options in the AF lager category. Not complex, but not trying to be — it's a reliable, unfussy AF lager that tastes like it was made by people who actually know how to brew lager. Which, given the source, they do. Available from Dry Drinker and independent beer shops.
