About This Drink
Dirwest is the Welsh word for temperance, though the brand carries the label with a knowing wink rather than a sermon. Named after the chapel-going traditions of Dwyfor — the old Welsh county that still enforced dry Sundays by law until 1996 — this is a non-alcoholic brand with its identity firmly intact. The botanical spirit is their gin-adjacent offering: juniper-forward, with the warmth of Seville orange and enough black pepper to give it some backbone. The bottle itself is worth noting. Made from flint glass (recycled) with the label hand-applied in organic ink, it is a genuinely considered bit of packaging for a small producer. There are no printed nutritional figures on-site but it is confirmed gluten-free and low-calorie. Serve 50ml over ice with tonic and cucumber or a slice of pink grapefruit — the suggestion on the Dirwest site is more detailed than most. Available direct from dirwest.cymru. It sells out in batches and is sometimes on pre-order, so worth checking current availability before ordering.
