About This Drink
Citron Cafe Noir occupies an unusual space in the Mockly range. Coffee and cocoa anchor the drink, then fresh lemon cuts through the richness and a fennel note adds an anise-like echo on the finish. It's not sweet in the way most canned mocktails are. It pours a deep, clear amber-brown. The aroma carries roasted coffee first, then a cocoa-like richness, with lemon brightening the background. On the palate the coffee and cocoa work as a smooth, slightly bitter foundation. The lemon adds brightness and keeps things from tipping into heaviness. The fennel is restrained, appearing more on the finish than upfront, which is the right call. This is probably the most adventurous drink in the Mockly range, and the one most likely to divide opinion. If you like bittersweet drinks with some herbal complexity, it's worth trying.
