About This Drink
Domaine de l'Arjolle sits in the Côtes de Thongue in southern France, a region better known for quietly confident wines than headline-grabbing ones. The Esquisse Blanc is their dealcoholised white, made from a blend of Viognier and Sauvignon Blanc. The grapes are fermented conventionally in stainless steel, then put through alcohol removal — so it starts life as a proper wine before the technical work happens. The nose is generous and immediately tropical: mango, guava, and passion fruit up front, then softer white-fleshed fruit underneath — pear and peach. On the palate the Viognier's lusher register fills out the mid-palate, while the Sauvignon keeps things lively with a clean, citrus-driven acidity. It doesn't drag or go flat, which is the usual hazard with dealcoholised whites. It works well chilled as an aperitif, and the crisp structure means it holds its own with delicate food — shellfish, white fish, asparagus, soft cheeses. Widely available through specialist AF retailers and some independent wine merchants in the UK.
