Named after the 17-Mile Drive along the Monterey Peninsula, this porter pours deep mahogany with a thin tan head. The nose is austere rather than sweet: roasted coffee, dark chocolate, and a faint earthiness from the hops. There is no caramel or confectionery on the aroma. On the palate, burnt coffee and dry roasted grain lead throughout. The dark chocolate note sits in the middle rather than on top, and earthy hops tie the flavours together in the background. The mouthfeel runs lighter than most porters, which keeps it drinkable and stops the roasted intensity from becoming oppressive. Brewed using Kveik yeast without heat pasteurisation, which the brewery believes helps retain more flavour. At around 14 calories per 100ml it is lean for the style. If you find most non-alcoholic porters too sweet or too thin, this one leans in the opposite direction.
