The brand's founding story begins with Donna Hockey's recovery from breast cancer. During treatment, Hockey found that almost no AF options combined genuine craft beer flavour with a nutritional profile that suited her health goals. That gap became the prompt for a brewery committed entirely to alcohol-free craft beer, built from the start as a dedicated facility rather than a low-alcohol offshoot of an existing operation.

Surreal Brewing uses a proprietary brewing process that avoids both heat treatment and vacuum distillation. Most AF beers reach their final ABV through one of two routes: conventional dealcoholisation, in which a finished beer is brewed at full strength and alcohol is removed, often with heat that degrades delicate aromatics, or vacuum distillation, which lowers the boiling point of alcohol by reducing atmospheric pressure inside the vessel to protect those aromatics during removal. Surreal's process sidesteps both, keeping production within a pure brewing framework rather than adding a separate alcohol-removal step at the end.

The portfolio is built around specific nutritional credentials: low in calories and carbohydrates, high in protein, and gluten-reduced across much of the range. Styles span IPAs, porters, and lighter lager-style formats. Several products take their names from landmarks along the California coast, grounding the brand in a sense of place that runs through its identity.

As a brewery built around AF production from the outset, Surreal sits within a small cohort of US producers that treat alcohol-free craft beer as a primary discipline rather than a secondary line. Distribution is primarily through the brand's own website and specialist AF retailers, with a primary focus on the US market.
