Lautus
Lautus is a South African alcohol-free wine brand founded in 2017 by winemaker Reg Holder, and was the first dealcoholised wine produced in South Africa. The brand name derives from the Latin for pure, elegant, or sumptuous, reflecting its premium positioning in the AF wine category.
Holder sources grapes from cool-climate regions of the Western Cape, providing the aromatic base wines that underpin the range. Lautus removes alcohol using spinning cone technology, a low-temperature method of separating alcohol from finished wine that preserves the delicate aromas of the grape varieties. The first product, a Sauvignon Blanc, launched in 2017 and was noted in the South African wine press as a pioneering move in the domestic market, at a point when dealcoholised wine barely existed as a category in the country.
The range has since expanded to cover still and sparkling white wines, rosé styles, and a red blend, giving Lautus one of the more varied portfolios among alcohol-free wine producers with a single-country terroir focus. Holder's winemaking background in the Western Cape gives the range a regional identity rooted in cool-climate viticulture, which is unusual in a category increasingly populated by producers without a prior winemaking history.
Lautus is distributed internationally, with a presence in South Africa, the United States, and through specialist retailers in other markets. For sober-curious drinkers looking for an AF wine with genuine wine-region provenance, Lautus offers something with clear geographic identity and a production history stretching back to when the category barely existed in its home market.
